About Vidyartha College Vidyartha is a premier boys' school situated in the hill capital of Sri Lanka. It has produced many outstanding scholars in various fields. Vidyartha has achieved many victories in its history. Currently it has over 3000 of student population and a well qualified academic staff over 150. Initiators of Vidyartha College Vidyartha College was initiated in 1942 as a result of the great effect of 'Vidyartha Society'. It was started in 1932 by the leadership of Hon T.B.Panabokke , Mr.M.B.Panabokke , Mr.S.L.Ratwatte , Hon William Gopallawa (the first president of Sri Lanka) , Lawyer P.B.Ranaraja , Mr.A.B.Pinnawala , Mr.K.B.Wijekoon , Mr.R.Thotawela , Mr.Ratnayake , Mr.G.D.A.Abeyratne , Dr.L.B.Senaviratne and Mr.M.B.Kulugammana. The main purpose of starting the Vidyartha College was to start a leading school for the Buddhist children in the hill capital. 'Vidyartha Society' purchased the 'Kings College' private school and started a new English Medium school there as 'Vidyartha College' with 40 students and 6 teachers. The first principal of Vidyartha College was Mr.G.D.A.Abeyratne. Development of Vidyartha College Because of the development of Educational and extra-curricular activities, in a short period Vidyartha College became a popular school in Sri Lanka. By the time a Main Hall and a Hostel was built in Vidyartha. After Hostel facilities were developed in Vidyartha College, children in rural areas such as Anuradhapura , Polonnaruwa , Ampara , Monaragala were able to become 'Vidyarthians'. In 1959 Vidyartha was named as a 1st Grade School in Sri Lanka. In 1978 it was named as a '1A' Grade school. On 1st August,1961 Vidyartha was undertaken by the government. Since then Vidyartha was managed by the government. In 1954 Advanced Level Examination was held at Vidyartha for the first time. Science Section of Vidyartha College was started in 1958.In 1972 Commerce Section was started. The IT Section of Vidyartha College was started in 1994. Achievements of Vidyartha Since 1942 Vidyartha has achieved many victories both in Education and Extra-curricular Activities. Thilina Piyadasa of Vidyartha is the captain of Sri Lanka Table Tennis Team. He represented the Sri Lanka Team participated for the Olympic Games in 2006.And he has achieved many victories in International Tournaments. D.K.Wanniarachchi and M.B.Walisundara of Vidyartha have achieved many victories for Sri Lanka in Boxing. S.P.Harischandra and R.S.Kalugampitiya are few of the Chess players of Vidyartha who have took part in the National and International levels. Kosala Kulasekara of Vidyartha was selected for the Sri Lankan under 19 Cricket Team in 2004.Vidyartha Cadet Band is one of the best school Eastern Bands in Sri Lanka. Start of the Vidyartha College Maths Section Maths Section of Vidyartha College was initiated in 1958.Since then it has become one of the best Section of Vidyartha which produce many University qualified students annually. Maths students annually organize a 'Science Day', together with other science students. For many years 'Vidyartha Science Day' has become the best 'Science Day' in Kandy. Science Society , Astronomical Society , New Creators' Society are few of the societies attached to the Maths Section. And Maths Students lead many of the extra activities in Vidyartha College. VCKMATHS Website The official website of Vidyartha College Maths Section was launched in 2007.This was designed by Sadupa Wijeratne of A/L 2008 batch, with the support of the whole Maths Section. This was the first website owned by a Section of Vidyartha College. |
